In general, adoption is thought to be a successful social arrangement both for the adopting parents and the child, but this success can sometimes appear less obvious when the infant is shown later to be abnormal, especially in mental development. Most people who adopt do so because they cannot have children of their own. When they adopt they wish to adopt a normal child and are apt to be disappointed to the point of rejection if things turn out differently.
